Motiva: The Next Generation of Breast Implants Have Arrived

Motiva breast implants, used for many years in Europe, are newly FDA-approved and ready for use in the United States.1

Superior Feel and Technology

The feel of Motiva implants is genuinely impressive. What sets them apart is their enhanced elasticity, providing a natural “springy” feel that surpasses standard cohesive gel implants. This characteristic isn’t just about comfort – it addresses a common challenge with breast implants: implant rippling.

For slender patients and breast reconstruction cases, where rippling is a significant concern, this improved elasticity offers a notable advancement. The implant’s ability to maintain shape while remaining naturally mobile represents a significant leap forward in breast implant technology.

Revolutionary Shell Design

One of Motiva’s most notable innovations is its “microtexture” integrated shell. Clinical data has shown this design significantly reduces the risk of capsular contracture – one of the most common complications in breast augmentation surgery. This advancement could potentially transform long-term outcomes for patients.

Important Considerations and Limitations

Should everyone have Motiva breast implants? It’s too soon to know. As with any new medical technology, careful patient selection and informed decision-making are key.

Safety Concerns

The textured shell design, while innovative, naturally raises some concerns among plastic surgeons. The recent history with Allergan’s textured implants and their association with BIA-ALCL (breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma) has made surgeons appropriately cautious about any textured surface technology.

Regulatory Status

Currently, the FDA has not cleared Motiva implants for breast reconstruction procedures. While this limitation likely stems from COVID-related disruptions during clinical trials rather than safety concerns, it’s a significant consideration for cancer survivors considering implant-based reconstruction.

Positioning Challenges

Perhaps the most practical consideration is the implant’s positioning behavior. The shell’s exceptional ability to resist capsule formation, while beneficial in many ways, creates unique challenges during placement. I’ve found that these implants require either minimal dissection or additional support measures to achieve optimal positioning.
