Dr. Cassileth discusses the importance of proper technique for a successful fat transfer.

Your Natural Breast Augmentation Procedure—What To Expect

Preparing For Breast Surgery With Fat Grafting

Your consultation appointment at Cassileth Plastic Surgery is your opportunity to learn more about fat transfer breast augmentation options and get answers to any questions you have. Dr. Cassileth will discuss your cosmetic goals and identify potential donor sites on your body from which to harvest excess fat via liposuction. Common areas of the body include the abdomen, arms, and love handles. If you decide that this procedure is right for you, Dr. Cassileth will give you detailed pre-operative instructions prior to your surgery date.

Your Natural Breast Augmentation Procedure

This outpatient procedure is typically performed with general anesthesia, but local anesthesia with mild sedation may sometimes be used. The fat grafting procedure begins with a specialized low-trauma liposuction technique on the area of your body that has been identified in your treatment plan.

The fat is purified and then Dr. Cassileth will use a cannula to inject it into the breasts. Skill and experience are particularly important in fat transfer breast augmentation surgery, since only live fat cells can be used for fat transfer, and the fat is placed in a manner that distributes it evenly and allows high survival rate and blood supply.

Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation Recovery

You may experience some bruising and tenderness in the liposuction treatment area, as well as the breasts. Your recovery time will depend on the extent and location of liposuction. Patients can usually resume day-to-day activities several days after their procedure, with some restrictions on strenuous activities for two weeks.

Natural Breast Augmentation Results

Your initial results will be visible right away, but will continue to improve over time. Your final results will be visible once any swelling subsides. A small amount of fat will be reabsorbed by the body in the first few weeks after the procedure. The transferred fat that successfully grafts in the breast tissue will remain permanently.

Frequently Asked Questions About Natural Breast Augmentation

Fat grafting does not increase breast cancer risks. For mammogram and ultrasound results, fat grafting done well makes breast tissue easier to see, as it increases radiographic visibility. If you get an area of fat necrosis, this will show up on an ultrasound, but it can easily be differentiated from something dangerous like cancer by your radiologist.

Ideal candidates for this procedure are in good general health and are seeking a natural-looking breast augmentation. Patients must have enough fat on their body to be harvested for fat transfer.

No, fat transfer can only be performed using your own fat cells. Fat grafting using fat from another person’s body would be akin to an organ transplant and would carry a high risk of rejection and severe complications.

Yes, fat grafting can also be used in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures such as breast lift surgery or implant-based augmentation to “soften” the end result and create incredibly natural-looking contours. Other common uses include fat grafting in combination with a tummy tuck or as part of a mommy makeover.

Yes, in addition to cosmetic surgery, fat grafting performed as part of a breast reconstruction plan after mastectomy or lumpectomy can enhance the breast shape by adding fullness and creating a natural look and feel.

During a second surgery after implant-based reconstruction, fat can be injected around the implant to give patients a fuller, more natural look. This layer of fat will cover ripples, mask the edges of the implant, and make the breast warmer and more “life-like.” Fat is also injected into any divots that resulted from the oncological surgeon removing breast tissue.

Fat transfer is also an excellent reconstructive resource for radiated tissue, since the fat can improve the look of radiated fields, helping to restore the tissue. For breast reconstruction patients who would like to remove their implants, cells injected via fat transfer can serve as replacement volume. Two or more fat grafting surgeries may be required to achieve the desired result.

Dr. Cassileth also uses fat grafting techniques for body contouring and for facelift procedures. Facial fat transfer can add volume back to areas where it has diminished due to aging and environmental damage.
