Vaginal Rejuvenation Surgery

Genetics, weight loss, childbirth, aging and other changes in the body can affect how the vulva looks and functions. The vulva comprises the labia majora (outer lips), the labia minora (inner lips), the clitoris, the vagina, and the urethra. You may notice enlarged labia with extra labial tissue, laxity, or a loss of volume or tightness. These factors can impact how you look naked, how sex feels, how easy it is to care for the area, and may even be problematic with certain exercises like biking or horseback riding. This can result in lowered self-esteem and a fear of being naked. It is often difficult to talk about this very personal and private issue. Dr. Lisa Cassileth will make it a priority to ensure you feel at ease discussing your concerns and needs and work with you to create the perfect treatment plan specifically tailored to your unique needs.

Even though every woman’s vulva, regardless of appearance, is “normal,” there are many reasons one may want to explore Labiaplasty. Dr. Cassileth understands the personal and sensitive nature of this procedure. She displays empathy, patience, and unparalleled expertise while guiding patients through the vaginal rejuvenation process.

What Is A Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is an outpatient cosmetic surgery designed to reduce the size of the labia, reshape the overall appearance and correct issues concerning asymmetry in the inner or outer labia. Typically, a labiaplasty is performed to reduce the size of the vaginal lips, specifically the labia minora; some women with an enlarged clitoral hood may also opt for a clitoral hood reduction labiaplasty.

Labiaplasty can be done using a wedge resection or an edge resection. Many surgeons use the edge resection, also known as a “trim labiaplasty”, and simply trim off the excess tissue leaving a scar along the labial edge which can lead to sensation changes, a visible scar, and even uncomfortable tightening along the vaginal opening. Dr. Cassileth uses a wedge resection: the incisions and sutures are strategically placed in deeper natural creases so there is no visible scarring along the actual labial edge. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the wedge labiaplasty achieves a more natural border. This hidden incision also optimizes sensation and avoids any kind of surgical appearance, even under close examination. We pay attention to detail and make sure the procedure is performed with the most minimally invasive technique possible.

Preparing For Labiaplasty

A consultation appointment with Dr. Cassileth is the first step. Your labiaplasty consultation is your opportunity to ask any questions you have and learn about your surgical options. If you decide that labiaplasty is right for you, we will create a customized surgical plan to meet your unique needs and goals.

What Can I Expect On The Day Of The Labiaplasty?

The procedure takes place in the operating room and usually takes about 90 minutes. Many women prefer to undergo the operation under general anesthesia, but it can also be done under local anesthesia. The procedure is relatively bloodless and has a low risk of complications.

What Is The Recovery Process Like After Labiaplasty Surgery?

In order to optimize postoperative healing, Dr. Cassileth advises patients to take it slow the first few days after labiaplasty surgery, which would involve bedrest with some easy ambulation. Pain is usually minimal, with some soreness expected within the first 48 hours. We see all patients approximately one week after surgery for a postoperative follow-up to ensure optimal healing.

Generally, you can return to work in 5-7 days. In 3-4 weeks, you can return to the gym but we recommend avoiding strenuous physical activities, such as running, for 6 weeks from the day of the operation. You will also need to refrain from sexual intercourse or tampon use for 6 weeks after labiaplasty surgery.
